Nkonki Audit Committee Conference for JSE-listed Companies attracts top local and international speakers

Nkonki’s Annual Audit Committee Conference continues to attract high-profile speakers. Dr Derek Yach, Head of the Vitality Institute, Discovery’s New York-based research think-tank, heads back to Johannesburg from New York this year to join the impressive line-up, which includes Bernard Agulhas, CEO of Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA), Dr Len Konar and Linda De Beer, among others.

JohannesburgOn Monday 29 August, assurance and advisory firm Nkonki will host the 6th Annual Audit Committee Conference specifically focused on assisting Audit Committees of listed companies to cope with their fiduciary responsibilities and challenges during the tough economic times. The one-day event will take place at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).

Before the conference starts, Nkonki will open the JSE market for trading in a formal ceremony. This will be followed by the conference from 9:30, with the programme director for the day being Andile Khumalo, Chief Investment Officer, MSG Afrika Investments, and well-known Power FM business show host.

The keynote speaker is Bernard Agulhas, CEO of IRBA talking about the role of Audit Committees in strengthening auditor independence, and highly-respected Audit Committee Chairman and Non-Executive Director, Dr Len Konar, who will guide Audit Committees on the value add they can provide in these tough economic times. The IoDSA’s Sikkie Kajee will speak on how Audit Committee members can enhance their effectiveness given their expanded roles and responsibilities.

They will be joined by Dr Yondela Ndema, Chief Compliance and Ethics Office of Sasol, who will be speaking on the topic of providing assurance on compliance to Audit Committees in challenging economic times, and Dr Derek Yach, who will be giving delegates an update on the integration of health metrics into integrated reporting globally.

This will be followed by a round table dealing with the topic “Contributing to a robust economy during challenging economic times”.

“We are pleased to say that Gardener Rusike, an Associate Director at Standard & Poor’s, and the primary credit analyst for South Africa, is confirmed to lead the debate and he will be joined by Dr Iraj Abedian, one of South Africa’s leading economists. They will be joined by Mbongeni Bhebhe, the CFO of STANLIB,” says Mitesh Patel, Managing Director of Nkonki, and the firm’s lead partner for Listed Companies.

“The last round table discussion for the day will be for Audit Committee Chairs to discuss the topics affecting Audit Committees including, cyber security, the new auditor report, the audit quality indicators, technical debt and globalisation challenges, among others. We are pleased to say well-known experts, Linda de Beer, Babalwa Ngonyama and Andile Sangqu, who have vast experience in chairing listed company Audit Committees, are the confirmed participants.”

Patel says that during its 23-year history the firm has developed deep expertise in working with Audit Committees and providing them with guidance on a range of issues. While Nkonki launched its Annual Audit Committee Conference in 2011 to assist Audit Committees to be fully equipped for the fiduciary responsibilities they have to discharge, Patel says that it became evident that a conference with a focus on listed companies was necessary this year.

The firm will host the Public Sector (National Departments and State Owned Companies) Audit Committee Conference on the 28th of September at the Gallagher Convention Centre, Gauteng and the Retirement Funds Audit Committee Conference in October.
